Agreed on the buff: simple, not $600, and an amazing source of basic warmth. Doesn't matter how nice a jacket is, if your neck is cold you're cold. As for a walk, it can solve every problem. Cold? Walk. Tired? Walk. Depressed? Walk. [Insert malady or concern here]? Walk.
Kahtoola microspikes are amazing. Any Manzella pair of gloves of any kind are worth the money. While I’m at it, any Mustang Survival gloves for water sports are absolutely unparalleled l
Great piece, Jesse. I had never experimented with whittling, but I can see it becoming a form of meditation for me. There is something ancient and pure about the process. And there are few things better for clearing the mind of nonsense than a walk and snow.
Thank you, Sam. Wille Sundquist’s book on Swedish carving techniques is inspirational. The simplicity as well as philosophy he articulates as part of the carving journey is inspiring.
Good post. We're just on the upside of our first real cold this winter, the -30 stuff, daytime highs of -25 here on the east slopes of the Alberta Rockies. It was just as bad out on the plains. Fortunately, we rarely get more than a week or two of this a year, and the climate is mostly ideal. I like winter, but sometimes you cross a threshold with the cold where it becomes an almost crushing oppressive force. It closes in and your world becomes small and everything becomes about merely enduring. It's not just cold anymore, it's the enemy.
We’ve been in a steady 0 degree F streak but warming up right now. Your articulation of that threshold resonates. Its funny how each season gets entrenched in my mind, as if each season is the way it will be forever. That oppressiveness… Year after year, I’m surprised how different the forest looks when leafed out. Short-term seasonal memory, I suppose.
Boy, that is true, even at 60 which i am. It soon feels like the steady-state. And yet, with each year it seems to pass faster. It’s conceivable the ground squirrels will be emergining here in a couple of weeks. Cheers.

Yes, 100%. It’s funny, though, how hard it can be to make myself do it when I’ve hit a block.

Thanks, Steve. I’ve never heard of either of those brands so I’m going to check them out.
